Delivering the hydrogen economy

The Spine Building, 2 Paddington Village, Liverpool L7 3FA, UK

As part of the UK’s first Hydrogen Week, the North West Hydrogen Alliance brought together local, regional and national stakeholders to discuss the significant progress the North West has made in hydrogen delivery. This major one day conference was free to attend and was held on 14th February at The Spine, Liverpool – a state of the art facility which is on track to be one of the most eco-friendly and healthiest workspaces in the UK - and we were delighted to be on board as sponsor.

The event showcased the great things happening in the North West across the full chain of production, distribution, transport, storage and fuel switching. The event delivered an insightful commentary for individuals across the sector, from investors and policy makers to businesses already in the hydrogen space and those looking to enter.

‘Hy’ and mighty

The world is looking to decarbonise, and hydrogen is poised to have a key role in the energy transition. Whilst hydrogen-based technologies have been around for many years, with the hydrogen fuel cell being invented in 1842 by Sir William Grove, there is an ever-growing interest in hydrogen technologies motivated by climate change concerns.  Indeed, according to a recent joint report from the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), technologies motivated by climate change concerns accounted for nearly 80% of all patents related to hydrogen production in 2020.

Mining and metals key for net zero commitments

Over 90% of world GDP is now covered by net zero commitments. But, as pointed out in a recent article by management consultants McKinsey & Company, the move to net zero will require unprecedented supplies of the raw materials – predominantly metals – used in the manufacture of green technologies.
