Giles Pinnington is a Partner based in Manchester. He is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, Chartered UK Trade Mark Attorney and UPC Representative, specialising in chemistry, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. He works with a broad range of clients, from start-ups and SMEs to multinational businesses, and has also gained valuable in-house experience managing intellectual property matters.

Giles has particular expertise in the energy sector, including oil and gas, nuclear power, fuel cells, batteries, battery materials and oilfield chemicals. His experience also extends to CCUS, the circular economy of hydrocarbons, large-scale chemical processing, water treatment technologies, metal casting, mining technologies, pumps, turbochargers, internal combustion engines, jet engines, sub-sea technologies and advanced materials, including quantum dots, polymers, alloys and catalysts.

His practice includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications internationally, advising on validity and infringement matters, and representing clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. His previous in-house experience managing an international patent portfolio for a global chemicals company helps him provide practical guidance aligned with commercial objectives. Giles is also a Chartered UK Trade Mark Attorney and was a European Trade Mark Attorney for many years.

Giles holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry. During his studies at the University of York, he worked on the elucidation of the 3D structure of mutated human insulin-like growth factor using X-ray crystallography. He speaks English.
