Overview & Expertise 

Dr. Walter Chan is an intellectual property lawyer and patent agent based in the Marks & Clerk Toronto office and a member of the chemistry and life science patent group. His practice focuses on patent prosecution, opinions, and transactional advice for clients in the chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical fields. 

Walter works with a wide range of clients including solo inventors, start-ups, universities, and multinational corporations seeking patent protection in Canada and abroad. He works closely with clients to develop pragmatic IP strategies that evolve with their business goals.  

Walter holds a BSc in biological chemistry from the University of Toronto, a PhD in chemistry from Stanford University, and a JD from the University of Toronto. His doctoral research concerned the development of palladium-catalyzed asymmetric methods for organic synthesis, and the total synthesis of biologically active natural products.  

Before joining Marks & Clerk, Walter practised patent prosecution at a leading Canadian intellectual property law firm and managed the intellectual property portfolio of a Canadian public research university.
