Overview & Expertise

Tom is a European Patent Attorney in the Electronics team at Marks & Clerk, based in Cambridge. He works primarily in the fields of software and electronics, with experience supporting patent applications at all stages of prosecution, from initial drafting through to grant. He also coordinates the prosecution of multi-jurisdictional patent families across the UK, Europe, the US, Asia and other territories, providing clients with consistent and aligned international strategies.

Tom has acted for major telecommunications companies on large patent portfolios relating to network provision, security and communications protocols. His technical experience also extends to scientific instrumentation, implantable medical technologies, sensors, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and cryptography. This breadth of experience enables him to provide clear, practical guidance across a range of technologies and commercial contexts.

He works with a diverse client base, including start-ups, SMEs, multinational companies and research institutions, particularly within the Cambridge technology ecosystem. His experience helps clients identify, protect and develop their intellectual property in line with their technical and commercial objectives.

Tom holds a first class MSci degree in Natural Sciences (Mathematics and Physics) from Durham University. He entered the patent profession in 2021, joined Marks & Clerk in 2023, and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2025.
