Overview & Expertise

Elliot is a UK and European Patent Attorney based in Marks & Clerk’s Manchester office. He advises on patent matters in the materials science and chemistry sectors, with particular experience in green and renewable technologies, polymeric materials, industrial chemistry, and medical and diagnostic devices. His work includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications, as well as advising on freedom-to-operate assessments to support informed commercial decision-making.

Elliot has experience in contentious matters, including European patent oppositions and litigation before the Unified Patent Court. This experience enables him to provide practical guidance on both protecting and defending patent rights.

Elliot entered the patent profession in 2019 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney (UK) and European Patent Attorney in 2023. During the European Qualifying Examinations, his answer to the opposition paper was selected as the best in English and published anonymously on the EQE website.

He holds a first-class MSci in Chemistry with Molecular Physics from Imperial College London and a PhD from the University of Sheffield. He has also undertaken postdoctoral research at the Universities of Sheffield and Liverpool, and has co-authored more than 10 academic papers covering areas including carbon capture materials, lithium battery electrolytes, co-crystals, solid-state interactions and catalysis.

• Inorganic chemistry sector — manages an IP portfolio for a supplier of inorganic materials used in paints, coatings, personal care products and purification, including drafting applications and coordinating international prosecution.
• Polymer chemistry sector — prosecutes European patent applications relating to polymers and formulations for a multinational chemical company, and manages a portfolio relating to construction resins.
• Oppositions — acts in European patent oppositions in the medical device field, including transcatheter heart valves, and advises on oppositions concerning carbon capture technologies.
