Philip is a UK and European Patent Attorney who specialises in protecting inventions in all fields of engineering. His technical experience includes software, telecommunications, medical devices, electronics, mechanical engineering and manufacturing.

Philip’s practice focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications. He has expertise in managing international patent portfolios, conducting due diligence investigations, drafting opinions on patent infringement and validity, and advising on registered designs. He also has significant experience in opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office, with a strong track record of success.

He has a particular interest in software and artificial intelligence, and regularly advises on the European approach to computer-implemented inventions. He also has extensive experience in telecommunications standards and standard essential patent (SEP) portfolios, having acted for several leading companies in the sector over the course of his career. 

Before joining Marks & Clerk in 2018, Philip was a partner in the London office of a large U.S. law firm, where he developed a good understanding of U.S. patent law. He speaks regularly on intellectual property law and has presented at conferences and events across Europe, the United States and Asia.
