We are delighted to see Marks & Clerk's latest XR patent report featured in ICLG, highlighting how extended reality (XR) technologies are evolving from the excitement of the Metaverse era into a more commercially mature market.
The article explores findings from the report, authored by partners Graham McGlashan, Greg Carty-Hornsby and Adam Wilson, which analysed XR patent publications between 2021 and 2025.
Despite a modest decline in patent filing activity over the period, the report concludes that innovation remains strong and increasingly focused on practical, industry-led applications rather than hardware development alone. The report highlights growing adoption of XR technologies across sectors including healthcare, telecommunications, automotive, aviation and entertainment, alongside a notable rise in innovation from startups, university spin-outs and specialist technology companies. It also identifies increasing patent activity relating to software-driven functionality, such as eye tracking, haptic feedback and AI-enabled immersive experiences.
The findings demonstrate how XR is maturing into a diverse technology sector with broad commercial potential, raising important considerations for businesses seeking to protect and maximise the value of their intellectual property.
