Overview & Expertise

Will Arends is a Partner in the London office and a Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney, as well as a UPC Representative. His practice covers a wide range of subject matter in life sciences and he has particular expertise in immunology (especially antibodies, ADCs, peptide vaccines and T-cell mediated immunology), molecular biology, diagnostics and medical devices (including stents and other implantable apparatus) as well as in non-medical subject matter such as food technology.

Will advises on patent strategy, drafts and prosecutes patent applications, handles oppositions and appeals, provides freedom-to-operate advice, and represents clients before the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office (EPO). He has prosecuted a substantial number of biotechnology patent applications before the EPO and has experience managing matters from initial drafting through to prosecution and opposition proceedings, providing clients with practical insight into all stages of EPO biotechnology practice.

Will holds an MA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, where his research focused on Internal Ribosome Entry Sites in HCV. He has worked in the patent profession since the mid-1990s and joined Marks & Clerk in 2007.

Client Work & Case Experience

Will has represented clients on many leading appeal cases that have been reported in the EPO's publication Case Law of the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office. These include T1396/06, T903/05 and T1456/06.
