Overview & Expertise

Tomas Karger is a Partner based in Aberdeen and a Chartered (UK) Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, UPC representative and Canadian Patent Agent. His practice focuses on advising clients across Europe and North America on the protection and strategic management of intellectual property.

Tomas has particular expertise in the energy sector, including oil and gas, renewables and clean technologies, as well as experience in wireless power and telecommunications. His work includes patent drafting and prosecution, portfolio management and advising on IP strategy across multiple jurisdictions. His experience in these areas helps clients to navigate complex patent landscapes and align IP with commercial objectives.

He is part of the firm’s Energy & Environment practice leadership team and regularly contributes to industry discussions on IP issues affecting the sector. He works closely with a range of clients, particularly SMEs and start-ups, supporting them in identifying, protecting and leveraging their intellectual assets.

Before relocating to Scotland, Tomas worked in Marks & Clerk’s Toronto office. Prior to entering the patent profession, he was an instrumentation and control engineer in the nuclear sector in Canada. He holds an LL.M in Intellectual Property Law from the Munich Intellectual Property Law Centre (MIPLC), as well as a degree in Mathematics and Engineering specialising in control and communications.

• Wireless power and telecommunications sector — managing multi-jurisdictional IP portfolios, including coordinating prosecution of patents, designs and trade marks and advising on portfolio strategy.
• Energy supply chain company — defending the client in multiple EPO opposition proceedings, representing their interests before the Opposition Division and Board of Appeal.
