Overview & Expertise 

Rachel Chen is an articling student in the Toronto office of Marks & Clerk.  She is a member of the Patent group, where she assists lawyers and patent agents with patent-related matters, including research, drafting, and prosecution work. 

Rachel brings a strong technical foundation to her work, with experience in areas such as artificial intelligence, and data, and connectivity, and engineering technologies. As an articling student, her work is carried out under the supervision of qualified lawyers and patent agents. 

Before joining Marks & Clerk, Rachel developed a background in forensic engineering, where she conducted technical research, investigated engineering evidence, and prepared reports for legal and insurance matters. That experience translating complex engineering concepts into clear, precise written analyses strengthened her analytical reasoning, technical writing, and attention to detail—skills that continue to inform her legal practice in intellectual property. 

Rachel completed her B.Sc. in Statistics and Mathematics and her J.D. at the University of Toronto. During law school, she served as the Senior News Editor at Ultra Vires, was an Associate Researcher with the Future of Law Lab, and a member in the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Externship at the Hatchery.  

Rachel previously worked at Marks & Clerk as a summer student. Outside of work, she enjoys making music, teaching classical piano, learning languages, and going down rabbit holes on the latest technology. 

Rachel is conversationally fluent in Mandarin and Spanish.
