Nick Etherington is an Associate and Patent Attorney based in Marks & Clerk's London office. He joined the firm in 2021 as a Trainee Patent Attorney.
Nick advises in the chemistry and life sciences sectors and has experience spanning pharmaceuticals, polymers, energy storage technology and display technology. His scientific background enables him to understand complex technical subject matter and support clients operating in these fields.
Prior to joining Marks & Clerk, Nick graduated from Durham University with a first class MChem in Chemistry. As part of his studies, he completed a year in industry as a medicinal chemist at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where his research focused on the synthesis and application of trifluoromethylation reagents.
Nick subsequently completed an MSc in Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, graduating with distinction. His research project focused on the medicinal chemistry development of DNA repair inhibitors as antibiotic adjuvants. His combination of academic research and industrial experience helps him provide practical support to clients working across chemistry and life sciences technologies.
Nick has been seconded at a multinational beverage company, where he fulfilled the role of interim Global IP Manager. Through this he has become experienced in the management of a wide-ranging patent portfolio as well as working with stakeholders, from inventors to directors.
