Overview & Expertise

Mitchell Clark is a Principal and Chartered Patent Attorney based in Manchester. He is also a European Patent Attorney and UPC Representative. Mitchell has experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the UK and European Patent Offices, as well as coordinating prosecution across a wide range of international jurisdictions, particularly the US, China and India. His practice includes opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO, with particular experience acting as opponent in the medical device field.

His work spans a broad range of engineering technologies, including turbomachinery, continuous inkjet printing, medical devices and tyres. He regularly supports clients with global filing strategies and provides advice on freedom to operate, helping organisations to manage risk and align their IP position with commercial objectives.

Mitchell has experience supporting early-stage innovation through to commercialisation. This includes invention harvesting, coordinating multi-case filing programmes and advising start-ups and SMEs on the role and value of IP. He also prepares IP audits, including through the IP Access grant scheme, and has delivered presentations on patent strategy and IP management to a range of audiences.

He joined Marks & Clerk in 2015 after graduating from the University of Southampton with a first class MEng in Mechanical Engineering. During his studies, he gained industry experience with Cambridge Consultants (Medical Technology division) and Rolls-Royce plc (Manufacturing Engineering, Rotatives).

Client Work & Case Experience

• Automotive sector — drafting and internationally prosecuting a multi-family patent portfolio relating to turbocharger technologies, including associated freedom-to-operate analysis.
• Printing technology sector — coordinating the drafting and international prosecution of a large portfolio (~15 priority applications covering ~80 interrelated concepts) in continuous inkjet systems, including freedom-to-operate work.
• Medical device sector — preparing EPO oppositions relating to prosthetic heart valve technologies.
