Overview & Expertise 

Dr. Justin Thuss is a registered Canadian Patent Agent based in the Marks & Clerk Ottawa office and a member of the chemistry and life science patent group. Justin’s practice focuses on patent prosecution and patent drafting services across a range of technical subject areas including organic chemistry, biochemistry, medical devices, agricultural and plant technology, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, clean technology, and oil and gas technology.  

Justin holds a doctorate in Chemical Biology from the University of Alberta, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from McMaster University. Justin applies his deep scientific background towards understanding the technical complexity of inventions which leads to better outcomes in drafting and prosecuting patent applications.   

Justin works with domestic and international clients including Research Institutes, Hospitals and Universities, as well as spin-outs and start-ups, and large multinationals and specializes in protecting complex, multidisciplinary subject matter. 

Justin is actively involved in the legal and IP community and is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). He also regularly attends industry conferences in Canada and the U.S. to connect with companies and organizations involved research & development of innovative technologies.  

During his academic career, Justin co-authored scientific publications in high-impact journals, including the Nature journal series and the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS).
