Overview & Expertise

James Shearman is a Partner in Marks & Clerk’s London office and is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and UPC Representative.

He has been with the firm since September 2011 and advises clients on the preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the UK, Europe and other commercially important jurisdictions, including China, Japan, Korea, India and the US.

James has particular experience in patent matters relating to pharmaceutical products, organic fine chemicals, chemical processes, food ingredients, energy storage and display devices. His experience across these technical fields helps clients secure and manage patent protection in multiple jurisdictions.

Before joining Marks & Clerk, James completed a PhD in medicinal chemistry at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Professor Steven Ley CBE. His doctoral research into the synthesis and biological properties of bromotyrosine-derived natural products was funded by Cancer Research UK.

James also holds a first class MSci degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge.
