Expert speakers, Professor Nikolaos Papageorgiadis (Chair in International Business & Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes, ULMS), Aimee Cawley (Partner, Marks & Clerk LLP) and Marcus Riby-Smith (Managing Associate, Marks & Clerk Law) will discuss patents - obtaining and enforcing them - in relation to the Liverpool City Region business landscape, sharing knowledge and research insights throughout the session.
Professor Nikolaos Papageorgiadis, Chair in International Business & Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes at ULMS - Professor Nikolaos (Nick) Papageorgiadis' research focuses on national patent and IP enforcement strength and firm level IP enforcement strategies worldwide and researches their effect on international business phenomena, the international business strategies of firms and managerial decision making. Nick’s academically published research is published at prestigious international academic journals and his research outputs such as the "Patent Enforcement Index 1998-2017", has a documented impact on the work of in-house patent managers (e.g. data used to inform patent filing decisions), external patent attorneys (e.g. used to educate clients about patent enforcement risks) and policy makers (e.g. used to evaluate national patent enforcement strength and develop evidence informed policies) in 19 countries globally.
Aimee Cawley, Partner at Marks & Clerk - Aimee is a patent attorney with over 20 years’ experience acting for clients in the chemical, materials and mechanical fields. Her predominant practice areas include advanced materials, chemical engineering, and renewable energy, though she is also experienced with inventions underpinned by various aspects of physical and inorganic chemistry, such as energy storage devices, dental compositions, catalysis, indicators materials, and materials processing technology.
Marcus Riby-Smith, Managing Associate at Marks & Clerk - Marcus is an intellectual property lawyer at Marks & Clerk Law who has nearly 10 years’ experience advising clients on a wide range of IP rights, with focuses on patent litigation in the life sciences sector and IP transactions. Before moving into law, Marcus worked for five years in the pharmaceutical sector assisting pharmaceutical clients with brand positioning, launch strategy, lifecycle planning and competitor profiling. This experience, combined with Marcus’ biotechnology and genetics background, allows him to quickly grasp the key technical and commercial issue of disputes and transactions seen in science-based industries.
