Overview & Expertise

Robert Carpmael is a Partner in the patents team, based in Marks & Clerk’s London office. He is a patent attorney and designs expert, focusing on securing patent and design protection for innovations in mechanical and civil engineering sectors. His experience spans construction, oil and gas, automotive, rail and infrastructure, agricultural equipment, manufacturing, medical and surgical equipment, including prosthetics and general healthcare products, alternative energy, including fuel cells and electrolysers, and commercial products such as travel goods, toys and packaging.

Robert has extensive experience in patent and design drafting and prosecution, advising both large and small organisations on patent and design filing strategies. He also handles general IP portfolio management and the provision of advice or opinions in relation to patent and design right infringement. In addition, he has considerable experience in representing clients at oral proceedings before the European Patent Office. This includes hearings before Examining Divisions, Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal.

Robert graduated from Durham University with an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering. He entered the IP profession in 1995, and moved to Marks & Clerk in 2009. Robert joined the M&C partnership in 2010.

A number of his articles about securing intellectual property have been published in national, local and engineering press.

Robert is a very practical person, often found in his workshop mending things, tinkering with remote control cars or taking on DIY projects. He enjoys spending time with his family, including time in the countryside on his family farm, giving him practical experience of agricultural equipment. He is also passionate about photography, fishing and skiing.
