Mark is the Finance Partner of the Marks & Clerk group. In this role he is a member of the International Board of Management, as well as the Boards of a number of Marks & Clerk group firms. Mark has responsibility for financial oversight of the group as well as responsibility for a number of operational functions. As Finance Partner he has led a number of high-level projects including mergers, acquisitions, high-level lateral-hires and various group restructuring.
Mark graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class honours degree in Computer Science, and was awarded the Williams Kilburn Medal for outstanding performance. Mark trained at Marks & Clerk, and qualified as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney before obtaining the degree of LLM in Intellectual Property Litigation with distinction. He additionally holds Postgraduate Certificates in Intellectual Property Law and Intellectual Property Litigation, both with distinction. He was appointed to the Board of Management of Marks & Clerk LLP in 2013 and to the International Board of Management as Finance Partner in 2015.
As a patent attorney, Mark specialises in patent matters relating to computer software, computer hardware, and business methods. He has considerable experience of advising in relation to the patentability of computer implemented inventions in the UK and Europe, having been involved in leading cases in this area before the UK courts and the European Patent Office. He has appeared before UK Intellectual Property Office on the issue of software patentability on many occasions and has handled appeals from the Intellectual Property Office to the High Court.
More generally, Mark has wide-ranging experience of contentious matters, being a Certified Patent Attorney Litigator and having managed high-profile litigation in the UK, USA and Germany, and patent invalidity proceedings before the Patent Re-examination Board in China.
