Gavin is a Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney, qualifying in 2021. He is currently studying towards registration as a Patent Attorney in Singapore. He also has a BSc degree in biochemistry and biological chemistry and a PhD in chemical biology, both from the University of Nottingham, UK. His PhD thesis was concerned with the application of cell penetrating peptides for the intracellular delivery of therapeutic antibodies.
Before joining the patent profession in 2016, Gavin worked for several years as a research scientist in biotherapeutic drug discovery for an international pharmaceutical company. During this time, he worked on numerous drug discovery projects with a focus on developing novel neurotoxin-based therapeutics. His research led to the selection of two clinical candidates. He is also an inventor on several patent families.
Gavin joined Marks & Clerk in 2023, having spent 12 months in New Zealand working at one of the largest IP firms in the Australasian region. In New Zealand, the majority of Gavin’s work was with Crown Research Institutes and New Zealand companies, helping them to protect their agriculture, dairy and nutraceutical related inventions. Before his move to New Zealand, Gavin worked for a leading UK based European patent firm in London, where he trained and qualified as a Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney.
Gavin has experience drafting and prosecuting patents in the chemical and life sciences fields, and a particular interest and expertise in working with biotech and pharmaceutical start-ups. He also has experience of opposition proceedings in Europe and Australia.
