We are pleased to share that our Canadian team has contributed to the sixth edition of the International Comparative Legal Guide (ICLG) Designs and Regulations guide, 2026.
The contributing editors are partners Jean-Charles (JC) Grégoire, Amrita Singh, Kevin Shipley and Paul Horbal, who provided an insight on law and practice related to both prosecution and enforcement of designs in Canada.
If you’re looking to protect a design in Canada, the guide covers common issues in design law and regulations including:
The requirements assessed by examiners
How to register and enforce a design
Obtaining relief and remedies for design infringement
The team also highlighted new trends and developments in new case law and updates from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).
Along with co-authoring the new designs chapter, we are thrilled to share that Jean-Charles has recently been appointed Chair of the Industrial Design Committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), having previously served as Vice-Chair of the committee. As a lawyer and patent agent, his practice focuses on securing patent and industrial design protection in various fields including high-tech, mechanical, and consumer products, and JC has considerable experience advising clients on design-related IP in Canada and internationally.
