Philip Martin

Philip heads the electronics patents practice in our Cambridge office. He specialises in matters relating to patents in the electronics, software and telecoms fields, including drafting, filing, prosecution and infringement clearance searching. Philip also has substantial experience of contentious matters including UK and international litigation, and has led around 70 EPO oppositions with, to date, around a 90 per cent success rate.
He works with a number of start-ups, as well as with larger companies, and has significant drafting experience in the fields of analogue, digital, RF, and power electronics, as well as cross-disciplinary matters, for example in the fields of biotech, materials and organic semiconductors.  He particularly enjoys complex/mathematical subject matter and has a personal interest in machine learning.  He is a member of various professional technical societies as well as being a committee member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.
Philip won a scholarship to Oxford University to read physics. After teaching for a year at Charterhouse he went to Cranfield, where he received the top PhD. During his time at Cranfield, Philip was short-listed as the UK's first astronaut. He then worked for five years as an analogue and digital rf design engineer and latterly as a projects manager, prior to entering private practice, initially focussing on European prosecution work for advanced microprocessors and semiconductor fabrication processes. Philip has been recognised as one of the world's leading patent practitioners.
Philip is recommended in the IAM Patent 1000 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 guides, which note his "outstanding technical ability with strategic smarts" and "pristine track record before the EP and a dazzling technical background". He was listed as an ‘IP Star’ by Managing Intellectual Property for the last six consecutive years (2014-2019) and recommended in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions of Legal 500 who described him as a “consummate professional with excellent abilities in drafting patent applications."
