Shuang Ren is an intellectual property lawyer based in the Marks & Clerk Toronto office. She is a member of the Patent group, and her practice focuses on patent prosecution, IP transactional work including licensing and commercialization, and IP strategy.
Shuang provides legal expertise to a wide range of clients ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations, as well as universities and financial institutions. She is passionate about helping clients navigate complex IP issues and providing tailored solutions that align with their business goals.
With a solid technical background in materials science and processing and control engineering, Shuang brings a unique perspective to her practice. She specializes in areas including artificial intelligence, advanced materials, digital transformation, data & connectivity, commercial and IP Contracts, and industrial designs.
Shuang completed her Juris Doctor at Osgoode Hall Law School, during law school, she interned at a quantum computing company and contributed to the development of their patent portfolio. She also volunteered with the IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic, providing legal information to startups and entrepreneurs. Shuang also holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Materials Science and a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Materials Processing and Control Engineering. She is a qualified patent agent in China and passed legal Bar exam there.
Shuang is actively involved in the local IP industry as a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). Prior to joining Marks & Clerk, she was an associate at an international full-service law firm and volunteered with Pro Bono Ontario.
Before coming to Canada, she worked as a senior lecturer at a university in Shanghai, where she taught and mentored students from diverse backgrounds.
Shuang is a native Mandarin speaker.
