With only a few days to go until the start of the International Trademark Association 2025 Annual Meeting, Kimberly Frith-Delisser and Jacqueline Chu share their thoughts on what they are looking forward to the most as they prepare to head out to San Diego.
Kim, it’ll be your first time attending INTA, what are you most looking forward to?
Kim: First, to say I’m excited is an understatement! This is my very first INTA and I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend. Moreover, I’m thrilled to be attending with the rest of the amazing M&C team from Canada, many of whom I look up to as mentors. I’m looking forward to diving into everything – the meetings, conference sessions, and the networking receptions. I’m especially looking forward to meeting clients and colleagues, many for the first time in person! This will no doubt be a highlight moment in my IP career!
Jacqueline, you’ve attended INTA on a few occasions now, what makes it so great?
Jacqueline: INTA is truly the world’s largest annual gathering of trade mark professionals — a unique opportunity to connect with industry leaders, clients, government officials and peers across the globe. While we may not often get the chance to meet our clients face-to-face in our day-to-day work, this conference provides a perfect platform to finally put a face to the name in a setting. During the INTA week, several of our clients and sizable corporations organise their in-house seminars to discuss their strategies, upcoming projects, and industry trends — helping us stay at the forefront of our field. That said, the busy five days can feel like a whirlwind — packed with back-to-back meetings and an intense 7am to 11pm schedule. But, it’s all part of the experience — challenging, exhilarating, and ultimately rewarding!
What makes INTA different to other events?
Kim: INTA is a huge conference in the trade mark, and wider IP space, and it’s unique because it's one of the only IP conferences that is dedicated to trade marks. It attracts tens of thousands of professionals from all over the world who come together to share knowledge, and of course to meet and mingle with each other. I’m especially looking forward to meeting and learning from trade mark practitioners from around the world about the key issues that are facing brand owners in the IP landscape right now.
Jacqueline: For starters, its diversity and global reach are truly second to none — offering everything from private meetings with long-standing clients, to networking sessions to connect with potential new partners, and a wide array of academic seminars covering all sorts of topics. It’s a fantastic opportunity not only to bolster and broaden your professional network but also to soak in the unique sights and cultural experiences of different corners of the world. As the conference travels to new cities each year, it transforms into a dynamic experience. Last year, it was incredible to see the entire district come alive with INTA energy — I even had an Uber driver who knew about the event and asked if I was a trade mark attorney! It truly feels like an exclusive global gathering, with an electric atmosphere that makes you feel like a VIP at the “Trade Mark Oscars.”
Jacqueline, what is your favourite INTA memory?
Jacqueline: For me, it has to be the year the conference was held in Barcelona — my first visit to the city, which made it extra special to experience its rich culture, stunning castles, and artistic wonders. The highlight was exploring Casa Batlló by Gaudí, and I am still craving the delicious Spanish tapas! As for the upcoming INTA, I’m especially excited for a US baseball game and I can’t wait to explore San Diego, particularly spending a few hours at Balboa Park, to soak up the sunshine and vibrant local atmosphere!
Kim, as a first timer, have you been given any tips by your colleagues?!
Kim: Yes! On a purely practical note, they have told me to wear comfortable shoes as there will be long days and lots of walking around. And this year being set in sunny San Diego, I’ve been told to make sure I stay hydrated too! On a personal and professional note, I’ve been told to be my authentic self in meetings. I think the key to building strong relationships with people and building a global network, is to be your true, authentic self. I’ll be bringing my unique perspective to things and am excited to hear and learn from fellow attendees.
