Luke Hill

As head of our Creative Industries team, Luke advises clients on all aspects of IP law, particularly in relation the protection and exploitation of IP rights in music, filmed content production, gaming, apps, lifestyle and fashion.

Luke has particular experience in the music industry of dealing with publishing contracts, record deals and management contracts as well as ancillary issues such as music rights registrations, live performance, music copyright infringement, sample clearances and general commercial advice.  The firm’s music clients include artists, writers, record labels and those involved in musical theatre.
Luke works with TV and film production companies on all aspects of production development, commercial contracts, IP registration and licensing strategies, branding and merchandising.

Although Luke’s main focus is the Creative Industries, he also has considerable experience in other areas of IP law, specifically in: the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields; regulatory law; coordinating multi-jurisdictional litigation; trade marks; domains names; design rights and counterfeit goods.

He also worked for a multinational pharmaceutical company prior to retraining as a solicitor at a leading London media and technology firm.
Luke graduated from the University of Bristol in 2002 with a BSc Hons in pharmacology. After graduating, Luke played in numerous bands and helped set up a music production company. He joined Marks & Clerk Solicitors LLP upon qualification in September 2008.

Luke is also a board member of the Americana Music Association UK and has been recognised as a rising star by Managing Intellectual Property, IP Stars, 2018.

Outside work, Luke’s interests include listening to and writing music (although he is beginning to suspect that his real love is actually the repeated un- and re-plugging in of musical equipment, rather than actually making any music). Luke has composed scores for short films and released music independently.
He also enjoys spending time with family, sport, film, and reading.
