Elizabeth Hayes

Elizabeth is a registered Canadian Patent Agent and a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). After joining the profession in January 1999, Elizabeth spent over nine years of her career practicing at a large intellectual property law firm where she managed patent portfolios for major pharmaceutical and biotechnological corporations. The main focus of her practice has been handling patent matters relating to chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, genetic engineering, and biomedical engineering. Based on the multi-disciplinary nature of her technical training, Elizabeth has also prosecuted patent applications in specialized areas of technology such as colloid/polymer chemistry, drug delivery systems, blood physiology and extracorpeal physiology.

In April 2001, Elizabeth successfully passed the United States Patent and Trademark Examinations and thus is qualified to prepare and prosecute patent applications before the United States Patent Office as a Registered Patent Agent.

Elizabeth obtained her BSc in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia. In recognition of her outstanding achievement, she was awarded a studentship from the Medical Research Council of Canada. She later received her Master of Biomedical Engineering degree from McGill University where she studied at the Artificial Cells and Organs Research Centre. While pursuing a technical diploma in clinical cardiovascular perfusion at the University College of the Cariboo, Elizabeth also worked as an allied health professional during her clinical internship and acquired knowledge in the operation of mechanical devices used in cardiovascular medical/surgical procedures.
