James Burch

James joined Marks & Clerk in 2019 as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Edinburgh office.

Preceding this, he completed a Master of Physics degree (first-class MPhys) at the University of York with one year of study at the University of California, San Diego.
Subsequently, James obtained a PhD at the University of St Andrews in the Synthetic Optics group. Here, he investigated flexible holographic metasurfaces, in particular, for anti-counterfeiting, microscopy, and millimetre-wavelength-antenna applications.

James assists in patent matters including: defence, IT/software, nanotechnology, optical technology, and semiconductors.
